Baron Carl von Schwarz (born July 23, 1817 in Söhle , Moravia , † October 21, 1898 in Gnigl ) was an Austrian building contractor from the early days .

Life

After completing an apprenticeship as a bricklayer, Carl Schwarz studied at the Technical Academy in Olomouc . From 1842 onwards, Schwarz - partly in conjunction with the Klein brothers , partly independently - was significantly involved in expanding the railway network in Austria. He was involved in the construction of the state railways Olomouc – Prague and Prague – Bodenbach and built the Bochnia – Dembica line. On his initiative, the Hallein - Salzburg railway line was built in 1860 , and a few years later he was significantly involved in the city expansion of Salzburg. In a contract with the city, he committed himself to regulating the Salzach , in return he received the land that was freed up as a result, which he then resold. The result of this contract can still be seen today on the narrow river bed and the villa-like construction along the Salzach (Schwarzstrasse, Imbergstrasse). Between 1857 and 1860 he built the main train station (architect Rudolf Bayer) and the railway bridge over the Salzach.

In 1872, on behalf of a consortium he represented , Schwarz had the project for a railroad from Vienna via Laxenburg, Wiener Neustadt, Pitten, Aspang, Friedberg, Hartberg, Fürstenfeld, Gleichenberg, Radkersburg and Pettau to the Styrian-Croatian border near Stanoschina [Stanošina / Stanoschin ] for the connection to a railway to lead via Agram to the Bosnian border near Rovi with a branch from Radkersburg (Halbenrain) to Spielfeld , for which the technical-military revision of the requested route was subsequently ordered. The route was realized as the Aspang Railway in the 1880s.

Schwarz, who also worked as a patron, was ennobled in 1869 and made a baron in 1872 . He died in 1898 and is buried in the Gnigl cemetery.
