Carla Diane Hayden (born August 10, 1952 in Tallahassee , Florida ) is an American librarian and head of the Library of Congress since September 2016 .

Life

Hayden studied at Roosevelt University ( Chicago ) and the University of Chicago , where she also received her doctorate in library science . She then taught at the University of Pittsburgh before moving to the Chicago Public Library as a children's librarian . From 1991 she was deputy director of this library, and in 1993 she became director of the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore . During the riot in Baltimore that broke out in April 2015 after Freddie Gray's death in police custody, she ensured that library branches in the city remained open to serve as a safe place for families and children.

On February 24, 2016, US President Barack Obama proposed Hayden as the next Librarian of Congress . The US Senate confirmed the nomination on July 13, 2016. She was sworn in on September 14, 2016. She is the first woman and first African American woman to hold this position. Unlike her predecessors, who were appointed for life, her tenure is ten years.

Offices and memberships

From 2003 to 2004, Hayden was President of the American Library Association . In this role she made a name for herself as a staunch critic of the Patriot Act .
