Carlos Clavería Lizana

Carlos Clavería Lizana (born March 25, 1909 in Barcelona , † June 16, 1974 in Oviedo ) was a Spanish Romanist and Hispanist.

life and work

Carlos Clavería studied at the University of Barcelona and in 1930 at the University of Munich (LMU) and was lecturer for Spanish at the University of Marburg from 1931 to 1937 (from 1933 also at the University of Frankfurt am Main ), then in the same position at the University of Uppsala ( 1940-1946) and Stockholm (1942-1946). In 1945 he received his doctorate in Madrid and taught at the University of Pennsylvania from 1946 to 1955 (1953 Guggenheim scholarship ). He was a professor at the University of Murcia (1950–1953), then head of the Spanish Institute in Munich (today: Instituto Cervantes ), from 1963 to 1969 also in London. From 1956 to 1960 he was also visiting professor at LMU. From 1960 to 1961 he taught in Los Angeles . From 1961 to 1963 he worked in the Real Academia Española on the project of the Diccionario Histórico de la Lengua Española (today: Diccionario Histórico del Español , little advanced). From 1963 he was a professor at the University of Oviedo . He was a member of the Real Academia Española (1972).

Carlos Clavería Lizana must not be confused with the bascologist and politician Carlos Clavería Arza (1924–2009), known as “Carlos Clavería” , or with his son, the Hispanic and book scholar Carlos Clavería Laguarda (* 1963).
