Carlton is a civil parish in Clarke County in the state of Alabama in the United States .
geography
Carlton is located in southwest Alabama in the southern United States, approximately 44 kilometers northwest of the Florida border and 35 miles east of the Mississippi border . It is located about 4 kilometers east of the Tombigbee River and 5 kilometers west of the Alabama River , which flows into Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico in the south as the Mobile River .
Nearby locations include Jackson (10 miles north), McIntosh (11 miles southwest), and Wagarville (12 miles northwest). The next larger city is about 65 kilometers south of Mobile, with a population of 195,000 .
history
The place was originally known as Hal's Lake and was named after a reservoir. A post office was opened in 1892. In 1902 the place was given its current name in honor of a local family.
