Parcul Carmen Sylva (German: Carmen-Silva-Park ), named after the former Queen of Romania , is a city park in the Timișoara district of Elisabetin .

description

The triangular area of today's park was created in the 19th century on the original Esplanade site. The oldest flank is today's Strada Romulus, which once connected the German Mayerhöfe with the inner city as an overland road . This in turn was crossed from the former railway line to Karasjeszenö at the former Rosalia chapel from 1858 , before today's Strada Gheorghe Doja was added in the second half of the 1890s.

In the course of the increasing development of the former fortress foreland at the beginning of the 19th century, this triangular area remained free and became a park in 1912 through the planting of conifers. This was originally called Erzsébet liget , based on Erzsébetváros , the Hungarian name of the district of Elisabetin at the time. It was only after the Banat was divided in 1919 that the green area was given its current name. In addition, it was temporarily called Parcul Doina during the socialist era and only got its old name back in 2007. The tram stop by the park is still called Parcul Doina in 2015 .

The creation of the avenues and the setting up of recreational facilities did not take place until after 1912. After 1940 the park was replanted. On an area of two hectares, which is criss-crossed by two parallel avenues, deciduous and coniferous trees are divided into shady and light-flooded plots. Of the total of 20,350 square meters, 15,000 are covered with lawn.

In 2011 the park was completely redesigned. A hexagonal wooden pavilion offers space for open-air events and an artesian fountain with plays of light provides relaxation. The children's playground is 800 square meters and has a sandpit , four swings , four rocking horses and a climbing castle. 350 new trees were planted, 48 benches, two drinking water fountains, three bicycle racks and 34 rubbish bins were set up and a first aid point was set up. The modernization cost a total of 2.5 million lei.

Among the newly planted trees and bushes are evergreens such as the Colorado fir ( Abies concolor ), the Serbian spruce ( Picea omorika ), the creeping juniper ( Juniperus horizontalis ), the occidental arborvitae ( Thuja occidentalis ), the black pine ( Pinus nigra ) , the rocky mountain juniper ( Juniperus scopulorum ) and deciduous trees such as: the Japanese quince ( Chaenomeles japonica ), the silver birch ( Betula pendula ), the lovely weigela ( Weigela florida ), the real lavender ( Lavandula angustifolia ) or the magnificent stonecrop ( Sedum spectabile ).
