Parcul Regina Maria (German: Queen Maria Park ), named after the former Queen of Romania , is located in the Fabric district and is the oldest park in Timișoara . It extends between Strada IH Pestalozzi , Splaiul Nistrului , Bulevardul 3 August 1919 and Strada Episcop I. Lonovici .

history

The park was created by Johann Baptist Coronini-Cronberg , Governor of the Voivodeship of Serbia and the Temesian Banat , in 1852. After Coronini had received approval from the Viennese court , he ordered the esplanade along the fortress walls to be planted on an area of 40,600 square meters between the inner city (today: Cetate) and the factory town (today: Fabric). Originally the facility was called Coronini Park after its founder , but was renamed Városliget , Hungarian for "City Park", as a result of the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 . However three parks were from the former later by the urbanization and the construction of roads and bridges Városliget separated: the Rose Park , the Justice Park and the cathedral green .

In 1919, as a result of the division of the Banat , the Városliget was given its current name for the first time, but was called Parcul Poporului , Romanian for "Volkspark", during the socialist period and then until 2011 . In the year it was renamed again, significant changes were made, including the erection of a bust of Queen Maria.
