The Carrière des Nerviens is a nature reserve ( Réserve naturelle régionale ) within the Regional Natural Park Avesnois in Nord-Pas-de-Calais in France . It was founded on May 25, 2009 to protect an area of around three hectares with rare plants. The area extends to the municipalities of Bavay and Saint-Waast in the Nord department . The name goes back to the Celtic tribe of the Nervier , whose capital was Bavay ( Bagacum Nerviorum ).

The reserve is a former mining area for sandstone from the Famennium , especially for psammites and arkoses , which was filled with marl in the 1970s . The new soil was populated by pioneer vegetation , which coexists with natural reforestation and forms a mosaic habitat with it.
The area owes its protection status to fifteen rare native plant species, several of which are regionally protected and three are listed in the Habitats Directive . These are favored by particularly calcareous soils and the dual influence of oceanic and continental climates. The reserve also plays a role in the concept of the trame verte (“green grid”), which is widespread in francophone countries .
The owner and manager of the Carrière des Nerviens is the non-profit environmental association CPIE Bocage de l'Avesnois , which has made the preservation of biodiversity its main objective. To this end, working groups are regularly formed to combat the spread of the forest and the introduction of invasive plant species.
Flora and fauna
A total of 171 plant species are represented in the area, including fox's orchid , round-leaved wintergreen , bear pod , two-leaved forest hyacinth , pyramid dogwort , bee ragwort and wild pea . Forest forget-me-nots and zigzag clover grow on the edge of the forest . A tall herbaceous corridor houses the common butterbur .
Of the 42 species of birds that regularly visit the reserve, 25 are breeding . You can find hawks , sparrowhawks , field swirls and the woodcock . Of the amphibians and reptiles, the common toad , the common frog , the forest lizard , the wall lizard and the slow worm inhabit the habitat. Noteworthy insects are the western keiljungfer , the alder buckthorn , the common sickle insect and the long-feeler thorn insect .
