The Carrier Dome is an air- roofed stadium in the US city of Syracuse in the state of New York . The Dome is located on the campus of Syracuse University and is in possession of it. It currently offers 49,262 places for visitors. The naming rights are held by Carrier , a manufacturer of refrigeration and heating systems , which paid 2.5 million US dollars at the time .

History and use

The team of architects Finch-Heery and Hueber Hares Glavin designed the $ 26.85 million stadium and had it built by Huber, Hunt & Nichols and Geiger Associates. The foundation stone for the stadium was laid on November 11, 1978. The arena was opened with 50,000 spectators on September 20, 1980. The roof consists of a Teflon-coated fiberglass fabric and weighs 220 tons. It is held by a latticework on 14 up to 213 meters long and seven tonne bridge cables. The sound system and lighting technology also hang on the roof structure . The lighting system is equipped with 432 metal halide lamps (1,500 watt each ), 60 floodlights (1,500 watt each) and 56 sodium vapor lamps . The sound system was modernized in 1989 and 1999 and has eight Bose loudspeaker blocks . 16 fans with a diameter of 1.5 meters each on the north and south sides fill the roof with air. It is directed up to the roof via the 36 concrete columns on the facade. The columns are 18 meters high and weigh 40 tons each.

The Dome is the home of the NCAA -Sportmannschaften of Syracuse University named Syracuse Orange in American football , basketball (men and women) and lacrosse (men and women). In addition to sporting events, concerts by internationally known artists such as Bruce Springsteen , David Bowie , Elton John , Eric Clapton , Frank Sinatra , Garth Brooks , Genesis , Neil Diamond , Phil Collins , Prince , Rod Stewart , Santana , The Police , The Rolling Stones took place here , The Who and U2 .

A renovation of the Carrier Dome is currently under discussion. There is also an exchange of the roof construction in the room. A roof like the BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, Canada would be conceivable. There, the air-supported roof was replaced by a closable roof, similar to that in the Frankfurt Commerzbank-Arena .
