Carson Raymond Smith (born January 1, 1931 in San Francisco , † November 2, 1997 in Las Vegas ) was an American jazz bassist .

Carson Smith began his career in the West Coast jazz scene, playing in the band of Gerry Mulligan (1952–53), Chet Baker (1953–55), Russ Freeman (1955–56) and Chico Hamilton (1955–57). Carson Smith also worked on recordings by Clifford Brown (1954), Dick Twardzik (1954) and Billie Holiday , which he accompanied in 1956 with Chico Hamilton's band at Carnegie Hall . In the late 1950s he played with Bud Shank / Bill Perkins . In 1959 he toured with Stan Kenton's orchestra, then in 1960 worked with Charlie Barnet . In 1962 he moved to Los Angeles , where he played with Charlie Teagarden (1962) and Lionel Hampton (1963). In 1964 he went on a tour of Japan with Georgie Auld . In the 1960s he also worked with Buddy Rich , Arno Marsh and Carl Fontana . Eventually he became a resident musician at the 4 Queens Hotel in Las Vegas, where he accompanied traveling musicians such as Art Farmer , Lew Tabackin , Zoot Sims and Chet Baker. In 1989 he worked on a reunion album with Chico Hamilton, which was released on Soul Note .
