The Carsony Brothers , actually Karl Raymond, Josef and Engelbert (Bert) Konrad Schrom, were an artist trio from Vienna - Simmering , which became world famous in the 1950s and 1960s .

Life

Karl Raymond Schrom (* September 14, 1924 Vienna, † December 13, 2012 USA ) was born as the third child of his parents in poor circumstances in Vienna-Simmering and grew up together with the younger twin brothers Josef (* 1935 Vienna, † 1964 USA) and Engelbert Konrad (* 1935 Vienna, † 1964 USA) and 13 other siblings in the Hasenleiten barracks settlement . After the father died early, the children had to do their part to support the family. Collecting wood and looking for odd jobs were part of it, depending on the age. Karl Raymond Schrom was already impressed by the circus as a 6-year-old and decided to become an artist later. To this end, he began to train and became a talented gymnast. Participation in the Olympic Games in 1940 was in the room, but these dreams were ruined by the Second World War . At the age of 17 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1941, and in 1944 he was taken prisoner by the Americans near Monte Cassino . In this context, he was taken to the USA, at the POW camp at Camp Carson , Colorado , where he continued to train, founded a theater company and sent exercise instructions to his younger brothers by prisoner mail, who followed them diligently. While in the camp, Karl decided to return to the USA one day as an artist.

Career

In 1948 he returned Karl Raymond Schrom to Vienna and founded the "Carsony Brothers" with his two brothers. The name is a reference to the Carson POW camp. First there followed appearances in a Viennese variety theater , then engagements in Hungary , Australia , Africa , India and the USA, where they were discovered and promoted by Bob Hope . With their number, the one-armed handstand on a walking stick, they delighted the audience, which was also due to Karl's entertainer talent.

The Carsony Brothers' big breakthrough came when Karl made a bet with a millionaire in Hollywood and performed the one-armed handstand on a walking stick unsecured on the neon sign on the roof of a nightclub in Las Vegas , making it into the headlines of the newspapers. This was followed by regular appearances in Hollywood, Las Vegas, Paris , London or Monaco and also other appearances at lofty heights such as B. at the opening of the Sahara Hotel .

The Carsony Brothers had become Hollywood stars and cultivated friendships with stars like Dean Martin , Jerry Lewis , Frank Sinatra , Sammy Davis Jr. , Liza Minnelli , The Andrew Sisters , the Kessler twins or Liberace , who helped them acquire US citizenship to get. In 1955 they returned to their hometown to perform at the Moulin Rouge in Vienna . In 1960 the brothers played themselves in the TV series "Vera Lynn Presents".

When the twin brothers Josef and Engelbert both committed suicide within a month for unknown reasons, the Carsony Brothers' career ended abruptly. Karl tried a solo career for a while until he started working as a croupier in a casino in Las Vegas.
