Stephan von Bothmer

Carsten-Stephan Graf von Bothmer (born June 5, 1971 in Rotenburg (Wümme) ) is a German composer and pianist . He is best known as a silent film pianist and founder of the “Silent Film Concerts ” series in the Babylon cinema in Berlin .

Life

The pianist, who grew up in Lower Saxony, studied music at the University of the Arts in Berlin (UDK) from 1994 to 2001 and studied mathematics at the TU Berlin and the University of Freiburg .

He has composed works of so-called serious music as well as rock music and a rock opera, plus music for two short ballet pieces and music for short films. Since completing his studies, he has devoted himself particularly to dubbing silent films . He linked motifs and themes from classical and new music, from jazz and pop with historical sources from silent film music. Since 2006 he has been showing silent films at the Babylon cinema in Berlin-Mitte , which he accompanies on the piano , the cinema organ , the CineTronium (an electronic version of the cinema organ he developed) or with a film music ensemble .

He has regular guest appearances, primarily at film festivals , including the Going Underground short film festival , the Berlinale in Berlin, and the Mainz film festival . He has also appeared as a soloist in the Braunschweig State Theater and in the Komische Oper Berlin. In March 2007 he interpreted all 21 Lubitsch silent films over two days in his 30-hour silent film marathon . He accompanied the broadcast of the final of the European Football Championship Germany-Spain on the organ in the Emmauskirche Berlin, which attracted national attention. In 2006 and 2007 he interpreted silent films in front of a total of 18,000 guests.

At the 21st Braunschweig International Film Festival , he and an ensemble from the Braunschweig State Orchestra premiered his own composition for the film “Refuge” (1928) by Carl Froelich . He works closely with the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation . He was also a speaker at the "Colloquium at the Filmmuseum Berlin - The Early Film" and at the International Round Table of the Braunschweig International Film Festival.

At both the 23rd and the 24th Braunschweig International Film Festival, he held a workshop "Create Your Own Score!" In 2009 and 2010. Under his guidance, children and young people developed music for a given short film and performed it in front of an audience. In 2009 this was a scene from the fairy tale " The Frog Prince ".

Stephan von Bothmer is married, has two daughters and lives in Berlin .

  • " Madame Dubarry " - composition for chamber orchestra, can be performed in concert or for the silent film of the same name by Ernst Lubitsch (1919). Commissioned by the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation and the Braunschweig Film Festival. Recording by the Braunschweig State Orchestra (2007) and performance in the Braunschweig State Theater in 2005 and in 2008 in babylon Berlin. Broadcast by ARTE in April 2008, repeated in May 2008. The music is published by Ries & Erler.
  • "The White Hell from Piz Palü" - composition for ensemble (trumpet, trombone, cello, synthesizer and percussion). Performable in concert or for the silent film of the same name by Arnold Fanck (D 1929).   • "Refuge" - composition for ensemble (flute, clarinet / bass clarinet, violin, cello, piano). Music for the silent film of the same name by Arnold Fanck (D 1929). First performance by an ensemble of the Braunschweig State Orchestra at the Braunschweig State Theater (2007).

  • "Vishnu / Vanama" - A short ballet based on the Indian Vishnu mythology. First performance in Stuttgart with dancers from the Stuttgart Ballet (2007). A composition commission from the Orpheus Music Theater.
  • "Dance of the Deer" - Short ballet based on an Aztec fairy tale. First performance in Stuttgart with dancers from the Stuttgart Ballet (2003). A composition commission from the Orpheus Music Theater. Choreography: Leo Lev.
  • "Die Welle" - rock opera based on the book of the same name. Composition and staging together with Marco Trochelmann.
  • "Vocal Sextet" - Composition for Xiaosung Wang's "evaporating performance" a total work of art from music, visual arts and culinary art.
