FILMZ - Festival of German Cinema
FILMZ - Festival of German Cinema is the first feature film festival in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate . It has been held annually in the Rhineland-Palatinate state capital Mainz since 2001 . FILMZ is a public festival, which means that instead of a jury, the audience awards the prizes.
The festival
Since 2001 the festival has presented current, German-language productions from Germany, Austria and Switzerland every year. In addition to a feature film and a short film competition, FILMZ also organizes competitions in the medium- length film and documentary film sections . In addition, FILMZ brings young film productions from the region to the screen in its Local Short Films competition .
The festival also tries to create an atmosphere that is close to the audience outside the cinemas and thus to offer a forum for filmmakers and those interested in film alike, for example at the so-called FILMZirkel , which is open to both film guests and the public. In addition to the film program, the team organizes a supporting program on various festival days, which can range from a silent film concert to a flea market to a script pitching .
history
FILMZ has been a voluntarily organized festival of FILMZ eV (formerly Brainstream eV) since it was founded in 2001. In 2009, the Rhineland-Palatinate state capital Mainz took over the organization of the festival. Since then, FILMZ eV has been the organizer of the festival. It is mainly students who are behind the organization of the festival.
In 2012 the festival had to take a break. In addition to press accreditation, industry and student accreditation has also been possible since 2016.
In 2018, a crowdfunding phase was launched on startnext for further financial support . Further innovations in 2018 are the introduction of a new competition (55-FILMZ) and that of a festival sponsor who will present and accompany the festival.
Competitions and Prizes
In addition to a feature film and a short film competition, FILMZ has been organizing competitions in the medium-length film and documentary film categories since 2008 and 2010. The festival also shows non-competitive local films in all categories mentioned.
The feature film competition comes with the " Mainz Wheel " and a prize of 1,500 euros. In the medium length films competition, 750 euros are available like a trophy. The best short films will be rewarded with 300 or 500 euros and also with a trophy. The documentary film category is endowed with a prize of 800 euros.
The trash format "Gong Show" has been taking place with exground filmfest since 2013, and is endowed with a prize of 50 euros. The second local short film competition, 55-FILMZ, is new, and first place receives a trophy and 150 euros.
