The 2005 feature film Truth or Dare was directed by Arne Nolting and Jan Martin Scharf .

In the dramatic comedy , Katharina Schüttler plays a student who has to leave high school due to poor performance , hides her parents about it, continues to make her believe that she will continue to go to school and thus still have a chance to get the Abitur .

action

Annika is at the end of grade 12. Her father, a pilot, flies the Leipzig - Bratislava route twice a day . Her mother, who has recently discovered local politics , advocates building a bypass. But the greatest wish of the two is their daughter's Abitur. But Annika fails in the crucial math exam , so she stays seated for the second time and is discharged from school a year before graduation with the secondary school leaving certificate . On the way home, in conversation with her friend, she still resolves to admit the unfortunate failure of her parents. At home, however, the situation does not seem favorable. Her mother is currently running a meeting of her citizens' initiative to build the bypass and the father is very annoyed about it. Annika is silent and hides the news, but is approached and explained by her father about the next report card in order to avoid further stress that the reports would be distributed tomorrow. When night fell, the Schmelzers were asleep, only Annika was awake. In the middle of the night she gets up and looks for the previous half-year report. She manipulates it, changes the date and semester. The next day, she presents the testimony to her parents. The father is horrified and upset that Annika has not improved in any subject. Annika, who was hit, defends herself with the words: “You don't have a high school diploma either” to her father, who doesn't want to hear this and leaves. The mother reacts differently. She is delighted and says that her daughter is now growing up.

During the holidays that followed, the Schmelzers go on a cruise on the Astoria , but the two parents are still arguing, and the cruise is not a refreshing experience for Annika. The holidays are over and Annika is woken up by her mother in the morning. She should go to school. Annika tries again hesitantly to explain that she no longer has to go to school. But the mother, who is still busy with her citizens' initiative, does not listen and sends Annika to school. Annika is now taking the school bus into town and first going to the career information center . There she uses professional information films to find out about the job of a cutting machine operator (with the four specialisms of turning technology , automatic turning technology , milling technology and grinding technology ) and about the profession of sea freight inspector .

Then she wanders around, bored, and discovers, near a prefabricated housing estate, a wrecked tour bus that is standing behind trees and bushes, completely hidden in the wilderness. In the days and weeks that follow, she spends the mornings, i.e. during the supposed school days, in this coach, which she has set up comfortably, and tries to enjoy her free time. In the process, she gets to know Kai, who lives with his mother in the adjacent prefabricated housing estate.

But the situation is getting worse and worse. Her father lost his job after an accident and has been home ever since. She is sent to tutoring by her father to improve her math grades. Her former class teacher recognizes her situation and intends to speak to her parents. Her parents argued worse and worse and suddenly a divorce no longer seems completely unlikely. The only hold she has left is Kai, with whom she has befriended, but who demands that she tell everything to her parents.

The situation, which is now becoming more and more unpleasant, shows more and more similarities with the game of truth or dare . Annika spins like a " top " for a year until she no longer knows where up and down is, she bypasses the truth and ultimately chooses duty, because nobody wants to hear the truth anyway.

Production background

The film was produced by 2 Pilots Filmproduktion in co-production with the Art Academy for Media Cologne (KHM) and Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR), with the support of the North Rhine-Westphalia Film Foundation , Nordmedia , Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (MDM) and the Filmbüro Bremen . Theatrical distribution in Germany was taken over by Zorro Film in 2006 .

According to the two screenwriters, the plot of the film is based on a true story:

“We were inspired by Annika's story from a true incident: In my Abitur class there was a student who stayed in the eleventh grade and who soon no one could remember. Until her parents showed up on the day she was discharged from high school and looked for the girl. They believed their daughter, who had long since been thrown out of school, graduated from high school and they came to celebrate. It was a tragic but also absurd moment, which must have been preceded by a story full of drama and suppressed feelings. "

Reviews

"Light comedy with a subtle social touch and a wonderful Katharina Schüttler."

“Lies have short legs - in truth or dare you will […] witness how the protagonist gets more entangled in her lies every day. Anyone who fears a warning “Either… or…” moral with this material will be pleasantly surprised. […] The two young directors Arne Nolting and Jan Martin Scharf succeeded in truth or dare to implement the negotiated, at first glance very moralizing topic in a pleasantly subjective and refreshingly imaginative way. [...] Above all, the brittle charm and defiant play of the theater shooting star Katharina Schüttler [...] gives the story a special power. The result is an amusing film about growing up and first love, underlaid thematically with music by Klee. "

“The real-life story and the believable characters are particularly impressive. Unfortunately, the poorly successful camera work disturbs the enjoyment of the film not insignificantly and Katharina Schüttler, at 26 years old, seems a little too old for the role of 18 year old Annika in some scenes. The more conscious viewer will still not experience any disappointment when going to the cinema, even if […] 'Truth or Dare' lacks a bit of cinematic grandeur. "

“Jan Martin Scharf's and Arne Nolting's staging is pleasantly unobtrusive. The viewer is close to the student, but remains an observer from a distance. There are no hectic cuts and unmotivated close-ups. The emotions are evoked by the action and not manipulated by cinematic means. [...] 'Truth or Dare' is an honest film about the difficulties of growing up. "
