Elmar Fischer (born September 26, 1968 in Geilenkirchen ) is a German film director and screenwriter .

Life

Growing up in Geilenkirchen near Aachen in the Rhineland, Fischer completed his Abitur in 1988 at the Cusanus Gymnasium Erkelenz . During and shortly after his school days he worked as a freelancer for several local newspapers.

After graduating from high school, Fischer studied journalism at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich from 1989 to 1994 and completed an apprenticeship at the German School of Journalism in Munich from 1989 to 1993 .

Since 1992, Fischer has worked for various public and private television stations. For a while for RTL from Hollywood, shot a report for SAT1 in the war zone of the former Yugoslavia and created travel reports from the South Seas for VOX . In 1995 he founded the "here and now television production" with cameraman Norman Vaclavik.

After leaving the "here and now television production" in 2000, Fischer took over the development of a film series for Jetzt , the youth magazine of the Süddeutsche Zeitung, as a producer . Two films were made under the label “Jetzt: film” under the direction of Marco Kreuzpaintner and Lars Kraume , which premiered at the Munich Film Festival in 2002 . Kraumes film Kismet - Würfel dein Leben came into German cinemas in 2005.

Together with Tobias Kniebe , Fischer wrote the script for his first full-length feature film, Stranger Friend . The film was shown at film festivals around the world and won prizes, including the First Steps Award 2003. In the years that followed, Fischer directed television films and, as a director, was jointly responsible for the concept and implementation of the first two Tatort episodes in Stuttgart with Richy Müller .

Many of his films address current political events and question social, political or even economic mechanisms.

His political thriller Unterm Radar (2015), which illuminates an unbridled police and surveillance state, received the gold medal “as the best TV film worldwide” at the New York Festival World's Best TV & Films in 2016. Leading actress Christiane Paul was awarded an International Emmy .

He has been married to actress Mina Tander since 2011 .
