Post Mortem is a German crime - television series focusing on forensic and legal medicine that Produktions GmbH for the Sony Pictures film and television RTL was produced. It is reminiscent of the US American CSI series.
action
In completed episodes, a team of five from the Cologne Institute for Forensic Medicine led by Dr. Daniel Koch explains how found victims died and whether the respective cases involved a crime, an accident, a suicide or a natural death. As a rule, Dr. Koch together with Dr. Bergmann did the autopsies, while all kinds of traces of Dr. Moritz can be analyzed. Frederick Peyn, the youngest member of the team, is responsible for reconstructing the crime or the accident. In addition, there is Commissioner Brandt, who leads the investigation for the police.
background
Conception
Due to the great success of the US television series CSI: On the trail of the perpetrators and their offshoots , RTL decided in 2006 to also produce a crime series about forensic doctors. The title was borrowed from the similar television film Post Mortem - The Hooker Murderer, which RTL had already produced in 1996. However, no characters were taken from the film. The headwriter was Lorenz Lau-Uhle. The effect settings were edited by the Cologne company Pixellusion . Robert Rebele was responsible for the corpse effects .
While the series is thematically oriented towards CSI , cuts and visual style were taken from 24 : Often, visibly restless handheld cameras are used, which often go from close up (sometimes even smaller) directly to the close-up without cutting - a trademark of the US american series. 1,300 to 1,500 cuts were also made in a 45-minute sequence . Such a high speed in the sequence of images is otherwise only known from commercials and music videos .
Publication and program environment
After the premiere was quite successful with over 5.7 million viewers, the number of viewers fell by over a million in the second week. In the following weeks, too, audience interest continued to decline until episode 8 reached its low point with only 2.72 million viewers. Only the last episode of the first season recorded an increase in the rate to 3.36 million viewers. The first season of the series was released on November 8, 2007 by Sony Pictures Entertainment on DVD .
Despite the unsatisfactory development of ratings during the first season, RTL commissioned another season in April 2007. In this, the previously criticized camera work was calmed down and the cast by Minh-Khai Phan-Thi as Dr. Yvonne Janus added. The eight new episodes could be seen on the same slot since January 17, 2008. Five years after the last broadcast - on April 5, 2013 - the complete series was published by Turbine Medien, supplemented by the subtitle Evidence is immortal . This DVD edition was commented on by the well-known criminal biologist Mark Benecke , among others .
Parallel to Post Mortem on RTL, competing broadcaster Sat.1 adapted the similarly designed RIS - delitti imperfetti from Italy, which was already very successful there. Both Post Mortem and RIS - The Language of the Dead went on air for the first time at almost the same time. But the Sat.1 format also weakened on the Sunday broadcasting slot and was therefore also quickly discontinued.
