action

The 13-year-old Becky with heart disease is not only the eldest sister for her three siblings, but also a surrogate mother, as the actual mother mainly devotes herself to alcohol, the constantly running television and changing male acquaintances. Your best friend is Melanie, who lives in the hallway across the street. With the inexperienced Becky, Melanie finds the security that she completely misses in the boys from the high-rise estate, whom she abuses as a changing playmate.

One morning on the bus, Becky meets Bente, a fourteen-year-old boy from another school who lives with his parents in a beautiful terraced house and whose circumstances seem like fairy tales to her. The two shyly fall in love. But Bene's parents want to send their son to boarding school, as he is a constant victim of the tough guys who give him the insignia of prosperity such as B. remove the MP3 player by force.

The two newly in love spend nice days together, even if Becky neglects her duties as a surrogate mother and gets into trouble and Bene's parents come to the conclusion that he should look for a girl from their social class.

When Thomas, the new lover of Becky's mother Corinna, moves in with them, the family chaos seems to improve somewhat. Corinna wants to take care of the younger children again and so relieve Becky. But on the eve of her 14th birthday, Becky is abused by Thomas. After the rape, Becky wanders around disoriented. She is looking for Bente, but is fobbed off by his mother with a 50 euro note “for her birthday”. Meanwhile, Bente runs away from his father, who wants to take him to boarding school, and looks for Becky. At least he wants to say goodbye to her. Becky gets drunk in despair with Melanie's clique and collapses. Her heart has stopped, but Bente finds her and can revive her.

Reviews

“'Don't be afraid' gives the protagonists and the deeply moved audience a glimmer of hope. This succeeds not only because of the great work with the actors, but also thanks to the film's extraordinary visual language. [...] And so, 'Don't be afraid' is a supposedly small, very big film! "

- Rainer Tittelbach

“In this television movie, however emotional the impact, there is no hope. It only triggers fears, although it claims the opposite in the title. So nothing would be worse than if this film remained unchallenged. "

- FAZ

“'No fear' tells of the hardship of the world, but also of an unbroken belief in the power of love: Despite all odds, Becky and Bente manage to establish contact. For both of them it is their first love, the director stages their encounter as an incredibly tender touch in a raw world. The film leaves nothing out, showing lost children's eyes, neglected two-room apartments, sexual assault and extinct girls' faces. And there hermetic row houses, insecure middle class parents and an overwhelmed welfare state that can no longer even alleviate the need, but only manage it. "

- Frankfurter Rundschau

“Sensitive and tender (television) love and youth story with pointed dialogues; that the balancing act between realistic, hard drama and fairytale romance works, has to do not least with the convincing (and excellently managed) young leading actors. "
