Michael Schmitt (* 1983 in Adenau ) is a German film director and producer .

Life

Michael Schmitt grew up in the Vulkaneifel . After graduating from the Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium Daun in 2003 , he studied theater and media studies, sociology and English literature at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and at the University of Ghana in Accra and from 2009 to 2017 documentary film directing at the HFF Munich .

His documentaries have been shown at international film festivals, including Dok-Leipzig , Filmfest Munich , Crossing Europe Linz, Dokfest Kassel , and Zurich Film Festival . With the directors Annika Blendl and Leonie Stade he founded Man on Mars Filmproduktion in 2013, based in Munich and Berlin. The first jointly produced film, Mollath - "And Suddenly You're Crazy" , premiered at the Munich Film Festival in 2015 and then started in cinemas across Germany. For the project "Inequality. Wealth, Opportunities, Power" he was awarded the Grimme Prize and the Otto Brenner Prize .

Michael Schmitt lives and works in Berlin and Munich.
