The Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium (GSG) Daun is one of two state high schools in the district town of Daun in the Vulkaneifel district in Rhineland-Palatinate. The school was founded in 1962. The school is named after the Scholl siblings, known for their membership in the White Rose .

The GSG is a traditional G9 grammar school without all-day operation . In the 2016 school year, 71 teachers taught a total of 878 students.

history

After Easter 1962 the school was opened as the "State New Language High School". Eberhard Pfeiffer was the founding director. Initially, the premises of the Daun secondary school were used as classrooms. A separate building was erected between 1964 and 1967. In 1967, 404 students attended the grammar school. The name was changed to “Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium” in 1978.

As a result of renovation measures in 2008/2009, the GSG was made barrier-free with an elevator, a stairlift and a disabled toilet . The original inner courtyard also had to be sacrificed as part of these renovations: two computer laboratories, two science rooms, six classrooms and a teacher's room were built there over three floors.

Bilingual teaching

Bilingual teaching is practiced from the orientation level on. Since the 2003/2004 school year, English-language specialist instruction has been offered in the 7th and 10th grades in geography and in the 8th and 9th grades in history. Participation is open to pupils who, after two years of playful lessons in the lower level, take an exam and are suitable for this lesson according to the teachers' assessment. For this purpose, a bili class is formed in the 7th grade. The bilingual lessons can be continued in the upper level. After an oral examination, a certificate is issued at the end of the school career.

Student exchange

Partnerships have existed with French schools since 1980, initially from 1980 to 1999 with the Collège "Les Belleries" in Vineuil and from 1999 onwards with the Collège la Providence in Vendenheim near Strasbourg . A partnership with Oakwood Park Grammar School in Maidstone, southeast England, has existed since the 2007/2008 school year . Exchanges lasting several days take place annually.

Reading promotion

In May 1982 the reading club at GSG Daun was founded. The members of this working group meet weekly in the club room to read together, to discuss, to introduce books to each other or to prepare activities that serve to promote reading among classmates. The work is supplemented and supported by the reading scouts. Well-known authors such as Jo Pestum , Andreas Schlüter , Martina Dierks , Ralf Kramp , Franziska Gehm and Ulrike Bliefert were invited by the reading club to readings at the GSG.

Since 1999 the working group has been a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate Choir Association .
