Carsten Burhop

Carsten Burhop (born November 2, 1973 in Bremen ) is a German historian .

Life

After graduating from high school, Burhop completed an apprenticeship as a banker at Deutsche Bank in Bremen. This was followed by basic military service , which was followed by studying economics at the University of Bonn (degree: Diplom-Volkswirt). In 2002 he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD.

After working as a research assistant at the Institute for Economic and Social History at the University of Münster (2003–2007), Burhop received a Heisenberg grant from the German Research Foundation at the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods . In 2005 he completed his habilitation and the Venia legendi for economics.

In 2009, he received a call of a W3 professorship for Economic and Business History at the University of Cologne . In 2012 he turned down a call to the University of Glasgow . From 2013 to 2016 he was a university professor for economic and social history of the 19th and 20th centuries with a special focus on the history of the world economy at the University of Vienna ; he gave up his legal position as a German civil servant for life in favor of an Austrian employee. Since 2010 he has been a Research Affiliate of the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods. Since 2016 he has been a university professor and head of the Department for Constitutional, Social and Economic History (VSWG) at the Institute for Historical Studies at the University of Bonn.

Carsten Burhop's research focuses on the German, European and world economies since the 18th century, corporate history and the history of modern economics and its theories. He is a member of a number of advisory boards, associations and editorial boards:
