Carsten Peter Thiede

Carsten Peter Thiede KStJ (born August 8, 1952 in Berlin ; † December 14, 2004 in Paderborn ) was a German literary scholar , historian , papyrologist and theologian .

Life

Carsten Peter Thiede grew up in West Berlin as the son of a civil servant and at times played volleyball in the German Bundesliga, the Swiss National League and the British League National A (for the University of Oxford). He studied comparative literature and history in Berlin and went to Oxford in 1976 for postgraduate studies, where he began to be interested in New Testament papyri. There he joined the Anglican Church .

Since 1978 he taught literature in Geneva and at that time also organized the first Stendhal Congress, but maintained close ties to England, where he married in 1982. After that he lived in London, where he published several books. He was licensed as a Lecturer in the Church of England at St Margaret's Congregation in Roehampton in 1984 . Until the early 1990s, Thiede worked for several media companies, including the BBC and ERF and as an editor at R. Brockhaus Verlag . He later moved to Paderborn , where he did research and served as lay chaplain to the British troops and, after his ordination in 2000, served as the first German military chaplain (OCF) in the British army.

On Christmas 1994, Thiede became known to a broader public when the Times published on the front page the result of an article he had previously published in the Zeitschrift für Papyrologie und Epigraphik . Thiede had dated papyrus fragments of the Gospel of Matthew , which were discovered in Upper Egypt in 1901 and are kept in Magdalen College in Oxford, to the 60s AD for paleographical reasons. This re-dating of the so-called Papyrus 64 , the time of which research has put it around 200 AD, has been criticized by paleographers and papyrologists. The same applies to an earlier publication by Thiede on the text finds from Qumran , in which, taking up a thesis by the Spaniard José O'Callaghan Martínez , he argued that one of the small papyrus fragments from Cave 7 of Qumran contained text passages from the Gospel of Mark .

On behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority and in cooperation with the State Independent Theological College (STH) in Basel , Thiede was a co-director of excavations west of Jerusalem from 2001-2004 , which confirmed the location of the village of Emmaus, mentioned in the New Testament , near today's Moza. He taught as a visiting professor for environmental and contemporary history of the New Testament at the STH and had a teaching position at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Be'er Scheva / Israel .

Thiede was most recently a legal knight of the Order of St. John , President of the Reinhold Schneider Society and a member of the PEN .

Thiede died at the age of 52 after a heart attack. He left three children.
