history

The forerunner of the Military Geography Institute was created in the course of the unification of Italy in 1861 through the incorporation of the Reale Officio Topografico of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, founded in Naples in 1781, and the Ufficio Topografico Toscano into a topographical department of the General Staff of the Piedmontese and thus Italian Army in Turin . In 1865 the company moved to the former convent of the Basilica Santissima Annunziata in Florence . As an independent military-geographic institute, it was established there in 1872 under the name Istituto Topografico Militare and was given its current name, Istituto Geografico Militare , ten years later .

Due to the very heterogeneous map material at the time, the institute was commissioned in 1875 to create an official topographic map of Italy on a scale of 1: 100,000. The work on it took almost 30 years. About 75% of the national territory was recorded on a scale of 1: 50,000, the rest of the more densely populated or militarily more important quarter on a scale of 1: 25,000. On this basis the 271 sheets of the national map 1: 100,000 were created. In 1876, the development of photogrammetry began in the western Alps , which received a strong impetus in the 1920s through the use of aircraft . After the First World War , the institute worked on adding new parts of the country until 1927. This was followed by gradual new recordings of the national territory on a scale of 1: 25,000, between 1954 and 1965 according to Stanag in five colors. From 1966 the more practical and internationally more popular new version 1: 50,000 was published.

Recently, satellite-based surveying, digital map production and geographic information systems have come to the fore.
