They're playing our song

To bring the musical They're Playing our Song on stage, which was written by Neil Simon (book), Carole Bayer Sager (lyrics) and Marvin Hamlisch (music), Casablanca Record & FilmWorks boss Neil Bogart founded Casablanca StageWorks .

The musical was on 11 February 1979 to September 6, 1981 at the Imperial Theater on Broadway in New York premiered . Lucie Arnaz won the Theater World Award in 1979 for the female lead in the production , and the play was nominated for four Tony Awards and five Drama Desk Awards that same year . The record adaptation was distributed by Casablanca Records .

Frankenstein

However, the attempt by Bogart's partner, Peter Guber , to bring the play Frankenstein back to Broadway failed because Guber's idea of promoting such a production with funds from the film industry did not get the desired response from Broadway producers. When Guber was told that they were not acting there with such ideas, but were looking for a kind of silent partner, he got out of the negotiations for the participation of Casablanca StageWorks. The show later turned into a financial disaster for 20th Century Fox , who got into production instead. After 29 rehearsals, the only performance took place in the Palace Theater on January 4, 1981. However, the piece won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lighting Design .

Bread and Circus

Another 1980 production was Bread and Circus , which was produced at Peter Guber's alma mater , New York University . The university made rooms and students available for production. Bread and Circus was inspired by Alexander Calder's Wire Circus and was written by Brooke Lappin and Bruce Bassman and directed by Pat Birch. The music was by Hayden Wayne.
