Caspar van Baerle

Caspar van Baerle (born February 12, 1584 in Antwerp , † January 14, 1648 in Amsterdam ) was an important Dutch humanist , author , theologian , historian and poet . He latinized his Dutch name in Casparus Barlaeus .

Life

Caspar van Baerle was the son of the writer Caspar van Baerle and his wife Cornelia Eerdewijns. He studied theology at Leiden University and received a PhD in medicine from Caen University . In 1641 he became professor of philosophy in Amsterdam. His Latin poetry was highly regarded. He was friends with PC Hooft and Johannes Bodaeus van Stapel , received orders from the De Graeff family and corresponded with Constantijn Huygens and Descartes . He was also portrayed by the important painter Gerard ter Borch .
