Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft (born March 16, 1581 in Amsterdam , † May 21, 1647 in The Hague ), Knight of Saint Michael , was a Dutch poet , historian and playwright .

Life

Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft came from the noble patrician family Hooft , which provided several Amsterdam mayors in the 17th and 18th centuries. His father was Cornelis Hooft , a powerful Amsterdam city regent around the turn of the 16th to 17th centuries . Catharina , his cousin, was the wife of Cornelis de Graeff .

Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft is one of the most important poets of the Renaissance in the Netherlands. His views were humanistic; in the wars of religion of his age he remained generally neutral. His best-known drama is Warenar , which reveals a clear influence by the work of the Roman playwright Plautus . As a historian he became famous for his Nederlandsche Historien , begun in 1628 , a stylistic masterpiece on which he worked until his death.

He was wealthy and, since he was Drossaard ( Truchsess ) von Muiden , between 1609 and 1647 he managed the Muiderslot , a castle 15 km east of Amsterdam . There a literary and musical circle arose around him from 1621, the Muiderkring . The members and visitors of this group had a great influence on Dutch literature in the 17th century .
