Catharina Hooft
Catharina Pietersdr Hooft (born December 28, 1618 in Amsterdam , † September 30, 1691 at Ilpenstein Castle ), Vrouwe of the High Glory of Purmerland and Ilpendam , was a personality from the Dutch Golden Age .
Life
Catharina Hooft came from the noble patrician family of the Hooft . She was born as the daughter of Pieter Jansz Hooft , who was the brother of the Amsterdam regent Cornelis Hooft and the uncle of Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft , the eminent writer. She was also related to Frans Banning Cocq , the captain of Rembrandt van Rijn's painting The Night Watch , and to Volkert Overlander , the builder of Ilpenstein.
At the age of 17, Catharina Hooft married the widower Cornelis de Graeff, who was 19 years her senior . At the side of this powerful man, Catharina's change to one of the first women in the country took place. The couple had two sons, Pieter and Jacob de Graeff . The two young De Graeffs played in the summers in Graeff's country house Paleis Soestdijk with the young Prince Wilhelm III. of Orange-Nassau , the later king-governor of England and the Netherlands . In the municipality of Baarn , not far from the property on the Zoestdijk , the regent family Bicker lived in their country houses De Eult and Hooge Vuursche , this family was closely related to Catharina, as was the great Dutch statesman Johan de Witt , who was her biological nephew.
Her husband, Cornelis, died in 1664. Shortly after his death, Jacob wanted to marry Anna Christina Pauw van Bennebroek, the only daughter of the President of the Hof van Holland , Adriaen Pauw . But since Catharina Hooft didn't like the Pauw family at all , she did everything possible to prevent this marriage. She even took the help of Johan de Witt to dissuade her son from this connection. With success, in 1666 Jacob married Maria van der Does the daughter of a regent of The Hague.
When in Rampjaar in 1672 the political system of the brothers Johan and Cornelis de Witt broke up against the internal and external enemies of the republic, Catharina put her two sons on the new governor Wilhelm III. swear by Orange-Nassau.
In 1674 Soestdijk was sold to the Prince of Orange, and her son Jacob later took off as an officer in the battle of Bonn against the German imperial princes.
Miscellaneous
Catharina Hooft was portrayed at a young age, at the age of three she was painted by Frans Hals together with her wet nurse . This painting remained in the possession of the De Graeff family at Ilpenstein Castle until 1870 . Likewise, Catharina Hooft, sitting with her husband in a carriage, was painted by Jacob van Ruisdael and Thomas de Keyser when she arrived in Soestdijk .
In 1678, Catharina von Frans Banning Cocq's widow Maria Overlander inherited the rule of Purmerland and Ilpendam, north of Amsterdam. In 1691, Catharina Hooft died at her retirement home in Ilpenstein.
