Hooft studied medicine and chemistry at the University of Leiden with his nephew Pieter Cornelisz Hooft . In 1630 and 1631 he was also named as councilor and alderman in the Amsterdam government . Hooft also appeared as Hoofdingeland van de Purmer (in the Netherlands this denotes the highest level of dike management ). He was also one of the curators and teachers at the Latin School in Amsterdam.

Hooft and the perpetual motion machine

Pieter Hooft ran a chemical laboratory together with his friend Jakob Dircksz de Graeff . There the two "leisure finders" invented a perpetual motion machine , a machine that moves on its own. This invention was made by Cornelis Drebbel at the court of the English Stuart -King James I presented. Drebbel passed the invention off as his own work; But when the queen's carelessness broke the machine, Drebbel was unable to repair it. Due to the carelessness of one of his descendants, the unfunctional remains of the machine were also lost.
