Casteller Herrenberg is a former large site in the Franconian wine-growing region . It was dissolved in 2017 as the areas were renamed and originally included vineyards around Castell in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen and Neundorf in the Middle Franconian district of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim . Today the vineyards are all free of large areas.

Geographical location and geology

The vineyards of the former large Casteller Herrenberg site are closely grouped around the two towns of Castell and Sugenheim-Neundorf, with a distance of around 14 kilometers between the two town centers . As a result, the human geographic embedding of the vineyards is very different. The eponymous center, the Herrenberg above Castell, is located on the northern edge of the large area. What both municipalities have in common, however, is their location on the south-eastern edge of the Franconian growing area.

In 1993 the large site took up an area of about 70 hectares . Central are the small location sizes, which differentiated the large location from many surrounding areas. In terms of nature, the vineyards are located in the western Steigerwald . Castell lies at the transition between Steigerwaldvorland ( Schwanbergvorland ), stepland and the plateau of the southern Steigerwald. Neundorf is located in the stepland. The soils consist mainly of gypsum keuper , although reed sandstones can also be found around Castell .

Origin of name

The name Casteller Herrenberg refers to one of the historical centers in the western Steigerwald, the Herrenberg above Castell. The prominent elevation was already inhabited in prehistoric times. Later, a fortification was built here, which, as the ancestral seat of the noble Castell family, also gave the village below its name. During the Middle Ages , the castle was divided, so that there were two fortifications that have largely disappeared today.

In the course of the amendment of the Wine Act in 1971, the previous locations had to be combined into so-called large locations. In Castell, the name of the historic center Herrenberg was chosen for this. However, it is unclear why the Neundorfer locations also became part of the large, distant location, probably there were ownership relationships through the Fürstlich Castell'sches Domainamt winery . In Castell, however, most of the historical individual sites remained registered in the vineyard roll despite the feared confusion and thus present on the wine labels. In 2017 the large location was probably given up because the location name Herrenberg could not prevail.

Vineyards (as of 1993)

The list of vineyards is based on a list in the book Deutsche Vinothek: Franken by Hans Ambrosi and others. It is arranged alphabetically. The markings on which the vineyard can be found are noted in the second column. The areas of the vineyards are also listed. The nature of the soil and its predominant composition can be seen in the geology column . Notes contain important historical key points on the individual locations. In particular, the current affiliation of the individual situation can be seen here.

Casteller Herrenberg comprised a total of twelve individual layers. Several layers stretched out over several districts , whereby the vines often concentrated on one district (example Casteller Hohnart, Greuther Hohnart). The geographic coordinate refers to the largest part of the respective location. The locations around Castell are now assigned to the newly created area Schwanberger Land, while the Neundorfer locations belong to the Middle Franconian Bocksbeutelstrasse. Today all locations are free of large locations, only the Casteller Bausch and the Casteller Kirchberg are partially marketed under the major location Abtswinder Schild .
