Castelmuzio is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of the municipality of Trequanda in the province of Siena , Tuscany region in Italy .
geography
The place is in the Val d'Orcia approx. 6 km south of the capital Trequanda, approx. 7 km north of Pienza and approx. 33 km southeast of the provincial capital Siena . The place Montisi , a district of San Giovanni d'Asso, is about 2 km north, Petroio , also a district of Trequanda, about 2.5 km east. The place is 443 meters above sea level and has about 260 inhabitants. A few hundred meters south of the village flows the Torrente Trove , a tributary of the Asso ( Ombrone river system ).
history
The place is first mentioned as Casale Mustia in the 9th century in a document from the monastery of San Salvatore di Monte Amiata . In 1213 there was already the castle belonging to the Cacciaconti della Scialenga family. From 1270 the Republic of Siena took control of the place and in 1354 made it subordinate to the Hospital Santa Maria della Scala . The castle was acquired by Andrea Piccolomini in 1470 . After the Senese defeat against Florence in 1555, the place became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany .
Attractions
- Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta , church in the town center. Belongs to the diocese of Montepulciano-Chiusi-Pienza . Was initially dedicated to San Giusto and received its current name in the 16th century. The bell tower was also built in the 16th century. Was restored in the 19th century.
- Oratorio della Confraternita della Santissima Trinità e di San Bernardino , oratorio created in the 17th century.
- Pieve di Santo Stefano a Cennano , Pieve just outside the town center.
- Museo d'arte sacra della Confraternita , museum near the Oratorio della Confraternita della Santissima Trinità e di San Bernardino. Written in 1973 and contains the works that come from the environment of Domenico Beccafumi , Domenico Manetti , Pietro di Francesco Orioli , Giovanni di Paolo and Sano di Pietro , among others .
