action

Detective Inspector Mark Kleinert is supposed to transfer the Turkish Baran Sahin from Cologne to Istanbul for illegally possessing weapons . On the way he receives a call from his former lover Carla, who works as a luxury prostitute and wants to meet him in the city on the Bosphorus . The BKA officer Susanne Wahlberg is currently staying there. She is watched by a man named Jo Weiß talking to a Turk in a café. Later in a hotel, Jo stands in front of Carla's body, which Mark finds there after him. From his Turkish friend and colleague Ibrahim Balik, Mark receives the recordings of a surveillance camera in the hotel and has a picture of Jo printed out back in Cologne, which he believes is Carla's murderer. Shortly thereafter, Mark is suspended from his duties. Meanwhile, Jo drives to a remote house and finds the bodies of a woman and a girl. Also back in Cologne, Susanne Wahlberg visits her supervisor Kurt Herder during a session on the illegal arms trade and tells him that Carla's mother and daughter are dead. Jo lies in wait for her and wants to know who is behind the murders. Wahlberg, who was in Istanbul because of a short-range missile system where illegal deals are being carried out with the Russians and Iran, promises Jo to solve the murders.

After he was shot at in his apartment from the house opposite, Mark finds out that Carla was actually called Maria and was married to Jo under his real name Rainer Simon. The murdered girl was also Jo's daughter. He travels to Istanbul again to find out why his family was murdered and where several Russian missile warheads that Germany had confiscated have remained. Wahlberg, meanwhile, meets with Mark in a hotel and tells him that Jo is an undercover BKA man and that he once killed two of his colleagues. Mark and Wahlberg each take a room in the hotel. Mark persuades the BKA officer to have another drink with him and tells her about Carla. Wahlberg finally gives him a kiss and leaves.

In Istanbul, Jo is overwhelmed and kidnapped by several men during a Turkish bath. From Balik, Mark learns of Jo's kidnapping. It turns out Carla knew something about the missing warheads and wanted to sell her information. On Wahlberg's advice, Mark drives to his wife and their children, whom he once left for Carla, and makes sure that they get to safety. He then travels to Istanbul and, with Balik's help, does some research. With a special unit they storm the hiding place of Jo's kidnappers and free him.

Back in Cologne, Jo tells Mark that Wahlberg was behind the murders. Meanwhile, BKA boss Kurt Herder meets with the Turkish businessman Rasim Kirdar, who is simply called the “godfather” in the relevant circles. Wahlberg later visits Herder in his office and asks him whether someone from the BKA was playing the wrong game with them and whether it could be Jo. Herder, in turn, meets with Jo in a hotel lobby and expects him to give advice if he knows anything incriminating about BKA employees. Jo then receives photos showing Carla making love with Herder and passes them on to Mark. Jo learns from Wahlberg that Herder has built up his own network for arms deals in Turkey. Wahlberg Carla also targeted Herder after the confiscated warheads disappeared. As it turns out, Carla had blackmailed Herder with her information, which Mark also admits. Mark goes with Jo to a hotel in Cologne, where Jo meets Rasim Kirdar. Suddenly she is shot at from a passing car and Jo just barely escapes death.

Wahlberg, meanwhile, meets with the Turkish middleman Assad and complains that he killed Carla's mother and daughter since he was only given the task of investigating them. Wahlberg is finally arrested in her office. Mark visits her in prison and doesn't believe her when she says that the warheads business was too tempting and that things just took their course. Herder then phoned Rasim Kirdar and discussed a deal with him that could now go smoothly.

Reviews

" Death in Istanbul vibrates with inner tension and fascinates with a high level of acting," said Oliver Junge from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung . This turns "a rather dull story into the best television enjoyment". Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv said that the plot was “tricky”, but not “confused”. "[N] the ambiguous characters in their varying combinations and changing coalitions" are "above all the power of action, the density of information, the high speed, the tasty montage that cast a spell over you". TV Movie spoke of a "[p] ackende [n] star duel full of surprises". TV Spielfilm, on the other hand, simply drew the conclusion: "Pale script, the actors knock it out".
