action

The chief detective inspectors Schmücke and Schneider are called late in the evening to look for a corpse. The dead person can be identified quickly and it turns out that it is the runner Andrej Naumow. His sister Olga, who had already reported him missing, is also a well-known runner. The siblings wanted to take part in the city run. The young woman is visibly shocked when the commissioners bring her the terrible news. Apparently a car ran over her brother without the driver stopping. Schmücke suspects that there is an intention behind Naumow's killing, disguised as an accident. Possibly the man should be eliminated as a competitor, but the organizer weighs it down, as the prize money would be limited.

Schmücke and Schneider take another look around the scene of the accident in daylight and are sure that Andrej Naumow, coming out of the forest, wanted to cross the street and must have run very quickly. As if he was being followed. They will soon be able to locate the driver involved in the accident. Frank Hellmann states that he simply couldn't have stopped the brakes. He too had the impression that the man who ran in front of his car was being followed.

Olga now has to realize that her trainer and husband, Jan Köppel, speaks victory languages. She should only take third place in the upcoming City Run in Halle and under no circumstances run for victory. Although she does not like that, after all, she wants to run for her dead brother and give everything, she sticks to the instruction. She lets two competitors pass her by. Jan Köppel was shot at that night. He is taken to hospital injured and Schmücke suspects that it was warning shots. As a result, Hofmann, the trainer, is arrested because the pistol that was believed to have been shot at Köppel was found in his trailer. Hofman, however, denies having anything to do with the attack and says that someone wanted to "kill" him. The attacks continue and a short time later Maria, a new runner in the Köppel team , is attacked and injured. Schmücke suspects an act of jealousy, since he has found out that Jan Köppel is having a relationship with Maria. Despite her injury, Maria wants to start in the upcoming city run in Wernigerode . The investigators are on site, because Schneider fears another attack on the top runner. He secures the drinking bottle that was handed to Maria during the run, but the rapid analysis does not reveal any toxic substances. The inspectors remain vigilant and so Schmücke watches as manager Georg Stoll chases his German shepherd on Maria shortly after crossing the finish line, who is then struck down by Schneider with a targeted shot. It is clear to Schmücke that Stoll chased the dog on Andrej Naumow in the same way. However, Stoll could not have known that in his fear of a car he would run and die. The manager admits his actions, which were planned as a memorandum, since both runners had left their team to switch to Köppel.

Behind the attacks on Maria and Jan Köppel, however, was Olga, who wanted to frighten the two out of jealousy.
