Vera reminisces when she enters the old house on the North Sea where she and her ex-husband Uli raised their daughters. The house has been empty for years and is due to be sold the following day. When she enters the former bedroom, she falls from the clouds when she meets Uli of all people there, who has made himself comfortable in the former marriage bed with his new love, a young woman. Vera finds this inappropriate and tactless.
While Uli seems to be enjoying what is happening, Vera begins to work through lists with which she compares the inventory in the former household in order to process the sale of the house as quickly as possible and get it over with. When Uli asked why she actually wanted to sell the house, and especially so suddenly, Vera avoided it. Therefore, Uli suspects that Vera has something to hide.
When Vera's new partner Darius enters the house, the confusion is complete and the plot of the film picks up speed: While the men try to outdo each other in moving the furniture, the women quarrel. In the course of the tense situation, Vera learns that Uli's new love apparently doesn't even know that he had himself sterilized years ago .
The situation comes to a head when Uli finds a photo in the house that shows the good time he once had with Vera. The two then begin to criticize each other's previous mistakes and failures. All things that they had never said to each other before and thus neither of them had a chance to correct their mistakes in time.
After everyone involved had agreed to alcohol that evening, the situation calmed down and Vera landed with Uli on the old, shared bed. In this first conciliatory moment in the entire story, Uli learns why Vera wants to sell the house: She is terminally ill.
