Hot and Cold Love is a German crime film by Rolf Liccini from 1997. It is the 192nd episode in the film series Polizeiruf 110 and the 5th case for Schmücke and Schneider .

This time, Schmücke and Schneider are investigating the murder of the artist Verena Weißenborn. The perpetrator threw the sunlamp into the bathtub when she was taking a bath. After the autopsy, it is clear that the victim was three months pregnant. Commissioners Schmücke and Schneider first try to find out who the father of the child is and whether the motive for the crime is possibly to be found here.
The investigators received a reference from the victim's parents to Professor Paulus, with whom she had lessons at the art college and who is known for getting involved with his young students. He can show an alibi for the evening, but a visit to the theater seems too vague for Schmücke. Especially since a journalist confirms that she only saw him there until the break. Research into his eye-catching car reveals that Paul was near Weißenborn's apartment at the time of the crime. So cornered, he admits that he actually wanted to see her, but by the time he got there she would have been dead. A caller would have lured him there.
Meanwhile, the press is also rushing to the scandal surrounding Professor Paulus. There you can read that he is said to have had a relationship with Weißenborn's mother many years ago. The journalist in charge receives various tips from an anonymous caller on which her articles are based.
For Schmücke and Schneider it looks like someone is deliberately laying the wrong track here in order to incriminate the professor. The first thing that comes to mind is the victim's father. Paul had not only "nibbled" his wife and daughter, but had also spun off the position from him at the time. Sabrina Pohl, a fellow student of the victim, also had reason to hate Verena Weißenborn. She was with the professor before her and now had to watch how he always preferred Verena to her.
After Peter Weißenborn was caught setting fire to Paul's car, he was arrested on the strong suspicion of killing his daughter. In desperation, the man hangs himself in his cell. However, Schmücke is not convinced of Weißenborn's guilt and follows a lead to Dirk Raabe, a fellow student of Verenas. When he visits him with Schneider, he meets a psychopath who feels so safe that he makes a mistake in his testimony. When he sees himself convicted of the act, he wants to take Schneider hostage and Schmücke has to use his weapon. He hits Raabe on the shoulder and can put him out of action and arrest him. He was in love with Verena and couldn't bear that she wanted to continue to be with the professor. The child would also have been from him and she wanted to "attribute" it to Paul. He had not coped with this resetting and began his campaign of revenge.
