The Cataract River is a river in the east of the Australian state of New South Wales .
The source is located in the Local Government Area Wollondilly Shire around 20 km north of Wollongong . It is a tributary of the Nepean River , a source of the Hawkesbury River .
The source of the Cataract River is on the western slopes of the Coast Mountains, about 1 km northwest of Mount Pleasant . The river was dammed to Lake Cataract , the southern arm of which is only 5 km from the coast of the Pacific . Below the dam, the river flows in a north-westerly direction and flows into the Nepean River at Douglas Park . Overall, the Cataract River reaches a length of 23 km.
The river is an important source of water for the greater Sydney area . The water is collected in the four reservoirs of the Upper Nepean System .
