Cause of Death is the second studio album of American death metal - band Obituary . It was released on Roadrunner Records in September 1990 . It is considered a classic in the history of death metal.

Origin and style

The creation of Cause of Death was influenced by the change on lead guitar from Allen West to James Murphy . He brought a guitar style based on his previous band Death . The songwriting became a bit more progressive compared to its predecessor. A cover by Celtic Frost was recorded with Circle of the Tyrants . For the first time Frank Watkins could be heard on bass. The cover designed by Michael Whelan was initially intended for Sepultura's Beneath the Remains , but the label Roadrunner Records gave Obituary preference, although Cause of Death was released a year later as Beneath the Remains . Sepultura then selected another Whelan illustration.

reception

Frank Albrecht awarded "8.5 blood-dripping points" in the magazine Rock Hard : " John Tardy pukes his vocals just like on the vinyl firstling, the production is ultra brutal, and the tracks are surprisingly varied for Death Metal standards." He called the record " a new cult album for Death Metallers ”. Jason Birchmeier from Allmusic described the sound of Cause of Death as slightly worse than on Slowly We Rot . The album is "great" for its time. "Remember, this is 1990 - still way at the dawn of death metal. And though Obituary would make big strides forward with The End Complete in a year and a half, Cause of Death is nonetheless an intriguing album, especially from a historical perspective. “He awarded 3.5 stars out of five.
