Eliza Cecilia Beaux (born May 1, 1855 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † September 7, 1942 in Gloucester , Massachusetts ) was an American painter .

Life

After the early death of her mother, Cecilia Beaux grew up with her sister with relatives on her mother's side, as her French father did not deal much with his daughters. From 1871, Cecilia received her first drawing lessons from an aunt who was best known for her historical and religious pictures. Due to her great talent, the aunt made sure that she could soon continue her education with a Dutch artist. Cecilia Beaux was finally admitted to the Pennsylvania Academy as a student in 1877. Her first artwork, entitled The Last Days of Childhood , which she exhibited in Philadelphia in 1885, was an instant hit. Two years later, this painting was also successfully exhibited in Paris.

In 1888 she began a trip to Europe during which she studied at the Académie Julian and the Académie Colarossi in Paris and the old masters in museums in England and Italy . Her teachers included the painters Tony Robert-Fleury and William Adolphe Bouguereau .

From 1900 onwards, Cecilia Beaux lived in New York, where she distinguished herself as a portrait painter especially for the wealthy upper class. After all, the New York celebrities from politics, art and business frequented her house, and she liked to be portrayed by her. So their exhibitions also became social events. Her portraits include those of Georges Clemenceau , Edith Roosevelt , their daughter and Sir David Beatty, 1st Earl Beatty .
