The Río Cenepa is an approximately 230 km long left tributary of the Río Marañón in the Amazonas region in northern Peru . The Río Cenepa drains the eastern flank of the Cordillera del Cóndor on the Ecuadorian border. It flows through the north of the Condorcanqui province .

River course

The headwaters of the Río Cenepa lies on the border with Ecuador in the Cordillera del Cóndor at an altitude of about 2500  m . The Río Cenepa flows mainly in a southerly direction through the mountains. The upper course lies within the Ichigkat Muja National Park - Cordillera del Cóndor . There it forms smaller river loops . At river kilometer 37 the Río Comaina , the most important tributary of the Río Cenepa, flows into it from the west. 4 kilometers downstream, near the small town of Huampami , the Río Najen meets the river from the left. The last few kilometers of the river flow mainly in a southerly direction and finally flows into the Río Marañón, which flows eastwards, at the Orellana settlement at an altitude of around 220  m . The estuary is located 30 km west of the provincial capital Santa María de Nieva .

Catchment area and hydrology

The catchment area of the Río Cenepa extends over an area of ​​6804.4 km². In the north and west, the state border with Ecuador runs along the watershed of the catchment area. The Zona Reserva Santiago-Comaina is located east of the middle and lower reaches. The mean discharge of the Río Cenepa is 506 m³ / s.

history

The catchment area of ​​the Río Cenepa was disputed in the past between the two states of Ecuador and Peru. In 1995, the last of several armed conflicts took place, the Cenepa War .
