vegetation

Tropical mountain rainforests grow up to the tree line at approx. 3400 m . The mountain forests of the Cordillera de Talamanca show strong similarities with the mountain forests of the northern Andes. Typical are evergreen oaks, many epiphytes , tree ferns and the small bamboo species of the genus Chusquea. The mountain rainforest is also home to the quetzal .

Páramo is found above the tree line . The area around the Cerro Chirripó is the northernmost area in which one can find this type of vegetation . Low bushes and low bamboo are typical of the Páramo des Chirripó . In contrast, the Espeletia genus typical of the northern Andes is missing here .
