Cetoscarus is a genus of parrotfish in the wrasse family.
features
Cetoscarus are moderately high-backed wrasses with a rounded head. In contrast to the other genera of the family with one row of scales , there are two longitudinal rows of scales on the Interoperculare . In addition, they are distinguished by the distinct dorsal eye spots (ocellae) of the young animals. There are 3 rows of scales on the cheeks. The number of gill spines is 20 to 24. The strong front teeth of the upper and lower jaw are fused together and form a tooth shield, the cutting edges are notched. The teeth are largely covered by the lips, there are no canines.
distribution
Cetoscarus bicolor occurs in the Red Sea , the natural range includes Djibouti , Egypt , Eritrea , Israel , Jordan , Saudi Arabia , Sudan and Yemen . Cetoscarus ocellatus iswidespreadin the Indo-Pacific . The distribution area extends from Somalia to South Africa , from there eastward to the Tuamotu Archipelago including eastern Australia and the Middleton Reef , north to southern Japan and south to western Australia. To Hawaii come Cetoscarus types not available.
habitat
Cetoscarus species only occur on coral reefs .
Taxonomy and systematics
Both Rosenblatt & Hobson (1969) and Schultz (1969) did not recognize Cetoscarus as an independent genus, but regarded it as a junior synonym of the genus Bolbometopon . Randall & Bruce (1983), however, saw the distinction into separate genera as certain, an opinion which Bellwood (1994) followed, although he sees Cetoscarus and Bolbometopon as closely related. Cetoscarus was considered monotypic , with Cetoscarus bicolor is the only way. The populations of the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean are now considered Cetoscarus ocellatus conspecific recognized, but it could be on the molecular data on the population of the Indian Ocean to a separate species, Cetoscarus nigropinnis act.
Two types are currently recognized:
- Masked parrotfish ( Cetoscarus bicolor ( Rüppell , 1829))
- Cetoscarus ocellatus ( Valenciennes , 1840)
