At 1640 meters, the Chadwickryggen is the fourth highest mountain in the Svalbard Archipelago in the Arctic Ocean .

Origin of the name

The Chadwickryggen was named after the English physicist Sir James Chadwick (1891–1974). The name was suggested by geologist Walter Brian Harland when he was mapping southern Ny-Friesland .

Location and surroundings

The Chadwickryggen lies between the two glaciers Tryggvebreen and Smutsbreen in the Atomfjella mountain group. This is located in the southwest of the Ny-Friesland area in the northeast of the main island of Svalbard .

It is only a few kilometers away from Perriertoppen and Ceresfjellet .

Routes to the summit

On April 22, 2007, Robert Jasper and Markus Stofer succeeded in the first ascent of the east face of Chadwickryggen. The ascent is a mixed climbing route and was done in alpine style . They named the route Polar Pow (d) er and rated them with the difficulty M6. Robert Jasper and Andrej Erceg climbed another route two days later on the north-west face ( German Slovenian friendship , M7).

As early as April 17, 2007, Jasper and Stofer probably succeeded in the first ascent of an approximately 1,600 meter high summit over the north face ( Knut , M5) north of Chadwickryggen .
