Chagall is a 1963 documentary short film by producer Simon Schiffrin that won an Oscar at the 36th Academy Awards in 1964 .
content
The work of the artist Marc Chagall is the focus of the film. In addition to dealing with Chagall's preferred style, an attempt is made to analyze the content of his pictures and to fathom the intention that led to the choice of the preferred motifs for his works. His pictures are surrounded by a magical aura, there are, for example, people floating over the dark blue night sky or violinists playing their music on a roof. Two-faced people and many scenes that take place in the circus world are also subjects of Chagall's painting. A frequently recurring element in his pictures is the Eiffel Tower .
The painter's pictures are shown in chronological order to show how people and artists developed and to show that Chagall's increasing maturity is also reflected and can be read off in his art. The artist also appears in the film himself.
Production and Background
It is a production by Auerbach-Flag Films. The director of the short film was the Italian Lauro Venturi. It is the only documentary about the artist Chagall that was created during his lifetime and is integrated into the recordings of him.
Marc Chagall (1887–1985) was a French painter, illustrator and graphic artist of Polish-Jewish origin (his parents were Russian Jews). After changing stays in France, Russia and the USA, he lived in Saint-Paul-de-Vence in France. In his pictures he mainly records memories from his Russian homeland (Russian fairy tale world, motifs from the Bible and the circus). Numerous books were illustrated by the artist, but he also carried out commissioned work, for example he created the ceiling painting in the Grand Opera in Paris and poetic glass windows, mostly in churches. He is considered one of the most important painters of the 20th century, is attributed to Expressionism and is referred to as a "painter-poet".
