The Chagrin River is a tributary of Lake Erie on its south bank in the northeastern US state of Ohio . The Chagrin River, together with its tributaries, drains a total of 692 km² in the catchment area of Lake Erie. The main stream has its source approximately 6 km north of Bass Lake in the village of Munson Township in Geauga County , flows generally north and flows into Lake Erie after 77 km within the town of Eastlake in Lake County .

On its way north, the Charin River takes in several tributaries. The most important are the Aurora Branch Chagrin River , which rises in the city of Aurora in Portage County ( 41 ° 19 ′ 5 ″  N , 81 ° 15 ′ 20 ″  W ) and joins the main stream at Bentleyville in Cuyahoga County ( 41 ° 25 ′ 22 ″  N , 81 ° 24 ′ 42 ″  W ) and the East Branch Chagrin River , which rises at Chardon , Geauga County ( 41 ° 35 ′ 23 ″  N , 81 ° 14 ′ 42 ″  W ) and in the town of Willoughby flows into the Chagrin River in Lake County ( 41 ° 37 ′ 46 "  N , 81 ° 23 ′ 57"  W ).

A large section of the Chagrin River was awarded the State Scenic River rating in 1979 and 2002, respectively. There are more than 49 species of fish and 90 species of birds in the river's drainage area, according to the Ohio Department of National Resources . The name of the river comes from the Indian word Sha-ga-rin for clear water .
