Chaguaya (also: San José de Chaguaya ) is a town and an important place of pilgrimage in the Tarija department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
Pilgrimage to the Virgin of Chaguaya
Chaguaya is famous beyond the boundaries of the department for its pilgrimage church, which was built in honor of the Virgin Mary at the place where, according to legend, she appeared to shepherds in 1750. Thousands of Catholics set out every year between mid-August and mid-September to take part in one of the many masses, to receive the blessings and to address prayers and intercessions to the Virgin. For a large part of the population of the region, this pilgrimage has an extremely high priority among the religious holidays.
Another aspect is the sporting challenge and the adventure: especially many younger people hike in small groups all night long from the town of Tarija to this locality 67.5 km away. After a few hours of recovery, they sometimes go back the same way. However, transport by minibus in both directions is also offered. In Chaguaya, pilgrims await countless street vendors with small souvenirs, snacks and candles. The number of people in the village regularly exceeds the local population many times over during these four weeks.
Location in the vicinity
Chaguaya is the central place of the Cantón Chaguaya in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Padcaya in the province of Aniceto Arce . The village is located at an altitude of 1973 m on the right bank of the Río Camacho , which flows further below the town of Valle de Concepción and flows into the Río Rochero .
geography
Chaguaya is conveniently located between the different climatic zones of the country on the edge of the eastern Andes mountain range at the transition to the Bolivian lowlands, so that mostly mild and pleasant weather prevails. In the summer months there are frequent thunderstorms like torrentials, the rest of the year has very little precipitation.
The mean average temperature of the region is 19 ° C (see climate diagram Tarija), the monthly average temperatures fluctuate between 14 ° C in June and July and 22 ° C in December to March. The annual precipitation is about 550 mm, with a pronounced dry season from April to October with monthly precipitation between 0 and 30 mm, and a humidity period from December to February with monthly precipitation of about 120 mm.
Transport network
Chaguaya is located 55 kilometers by road south of Tarija , the capital of the department.
From the city of Tarija, the paved national road Ruta 1 leads southeast towards the cities of Padcaya and Bermejo . After seventeen kilometers from the main road, a paved country road branches off to the west, after five kilometers it crosses the valley of the Río Guadalquivir and after three kilometers you reach the village of Valle de Concepción . From there a dirt road leads in a south-westerly direction and reaches Chaguaya after 30 kilometers via Chocloca and Juntas . From here it's another sixteen kilometers on a paved road to Padcaya.
population
The population of the village has been subject to significant fluctuations over the past two decades:
