Chamwino is one of the seven districts of the Dodoma region in Tanzania with the administrative seat in the city of Chamwino . The district is bordered by the Chemba district to the north, the Manyara region and the Kongwa and Mpwapwa districts to the east, the Iringa region to the south and the Bahi and Dodoma City districts to the west .

Chamwino has an area of ​​8,056 square kilometers and around 330,000 inhabitants (2012 census). It is located on the central plateau of Tanzania at an average altitude of 1200 meters above sea level. In the north, the land rises up to 1900 meters. The southern border is formed by the Kisigo River, which flows into the Ruaha . The climate is predominantly a local steppe climate, BSh according to the effective climate classification . The rainfall is low, hardly more than 500 millimeters per year. The average temperature is 23 degrees Celsius.

In 2007 the former "Dodoma Rural" district was divided into two districts, Bahi and Chamwino.

The population rose from 259,885 in 2002 to 330,543 in 2012. This corresponds to an annual growth of 2.4 percent. In 2012, just under fifty percent of those over five spoke Swahili, four percent spoke Swahili and English, and almost half were illiterate.

Facilities and services

  • Education: There are 120 primary schools and 29 secondary schools in the district (as of 2019).
  • Health: A hospital, five health centers and 58 pharmacies are available to provide medical care for the population.
  • Water: Over seventy percent of the population was supplied with safe and clean water (as of 2013). In 2019, a solar-powered water supply project was implemented in the municipality of Makang'wa, so that all 7,000 households are supplied with 300,000 liters of water a day.
  • Energy: Electrical energy is obtained from the Mtera reservoir in the south of the district, but 95 percent of the population use wood and charcoal for cooking (as of 2012).

Economy and Infrastructure

  • Agriculture: Around 90 percent of the population live from agriculture. The most common foods that are grown for self-sufficiency are millet, corn and cassava. Grapes, sunflowers, peanuts and rice are also planted for sale. Around half of the households own farm animals. The animals kept most frequently are cattle, poultry and goats (as of 2012).
  • Commerce and industry: Only a small part of the population works in commerce and industry. Mostly they are small businesses that market or process local products, for example corn mills or carpenters.
  • Railway: The district is crossed by the Tanganyika Railway , which connects Dodoma with the port of Dar es Salaam in the east. There is a train station in Igandu.
  • Roads: National roads with a total length of 35 kilometers run through Chamwino. Both the T3 from Dodoma to Morogoro and the T5 from Iringa to Arusha cross the district. There are also a hundred kilometers of regional and district roads, which, like the feeder roads, are mostly only lightly paved roads as earth roads or with gravel.

  • President John Magufuli : Since the Tanzanian President John Magufuli officially moved to Dodoma in October 2019, he has lived in Chamwino.
  • Chamwino Music Festival: Since 2008 a traditional dance event has been held in Chamwino every year. 1200 artists performed for the tenth anniversary.
