Chandler Sprague

Chandler Sprague (born May 26, 1886 in Haverhill , Massachusetts , † November 15, 1955 in Sacramento , California ) was an American screenwriter , film director and film producer who was nominated for the Oscar for best original story.

Life

Sprague began his career in the Hollywood film industry in 1926 as a screenwriter for the literary film adaptation of The Lady of the Camellias (Camille), directed by Fred Niblo , with Norma Talmadge , Gilbert Roland and Lilyan Tashman . As a screenwriter he created the scripts and templates for twelve films until 1943 and produced two films in 1929. He also directed three other films from 1930 to 1931.

At the Oscar ceremony in 1945 Sprague was with David Boehm for the Oscar for best original story nominated, namely for the directed by Victor Fleming resulting war film Battle in the Clouds (A Guy Named Joe, 1943) with Spencer Tracy , Irene Dunne and Van Johnson in the lead roles. Battle in the Clouds was also the last film he was involved in making during his lifetime.

The film was remade in 1989 by Steven Spielberg as Always - The Fire Angel of Montana with Richard Dreyfuss , Holly Hunter and Audrey Hepburn .
