life and work

The Chevalier de Mayer was first an employee of the Mercure de France . In 1775 he joined the team led by the Marquis de Paulmy , Louis-Élisabeth de la Vergne de Tressan and Pierre Jean-Baptiste Legrand d'Aussy , who made the Bibliothèque universelle des romans from the treasures of Paulmy's private library (later Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal) edited in 112 volumes (Paris 1777–1789).

Then Mayer was the independent editor of a 41-volume collection of fairy tales and stories under the title Le Cabinet des fées , which was published in Paris (fictional in Amsterdam). In Volume 37 Mayer wrote (in addition to an introduction to the origin of the genre, pp. 1–38) a biographical lexicon of all 101 authors of interest in the history of literature (pp. 39–362), including a self-presentation.
