Charles "Charlie" Borck (born January 4, 1917 in Manila , † February 6, 2008 in Las Vegas , United States ) was a Filipino basketball player .
life and career
Borck was born the son of a German and a Spanish woman. The "The Blonde Bombshell" ( German blonde bomb ) called Borck won the national championship of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) with the San Beda College Red Lions in 1934, 1935 and 1936 . With the Philippine national basketball team he took part in the 1936 Olympic basketball tournament in Berlin . After two victories over Mexico (32:30) and Estonia (39:22), the team was clearly defeated in the quarter-finals by the later Olympic champions from the United States with 23:56. With ten points he was the most successful thrower in the Philippine selection in this game. With two more victories over Italy (32:14) and Uruguay (33:23), the 185 cm center - he was both the youngest and the biggest team-mate - secured fifth place with the team. To date, no Asian team has achieved a better result in the men's Olympic basketball tournament.
Until the end of his career in 1949, the Filipino continued to play in the national team. Borck then emigrated to the United States and worked as a brewer at Anheuser-Busch . In 1999 he was inducted into the "Philippine National Basketball Hall of Fame " together with his teammates from 1936 Jacinto Ciria Cruz , Primitivo Martínez and Ambrosio Padilla . Together with Carlos Loyzaga (1930-2016) he was honored as one of only two basketball players by the San Beda College in 2001 as "Outstanding Bedan of the Century". Prior to his death at the age of 91, Borck was the last surviving member of the 1936 Filipino Olympic basketball team. He was married and childless. Borck is buried next to his wife Helen in Palm Memorial Park in Las Vegas.
