Charles Burlingame

Charles Frank Burlingame III (* 12. September 1949 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ; † 11. September 2001 in Arlington County , Virginia ) was an American pilot of the airline American Airlines . He was the pilot of AA 77 (American Airlines Flight 77), whose plane was flown into the Pentagon in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks .

Childhood and youth

Charles Frank Burlingame was born on September 12, 1949, the son of Charles Burlingame jr. and Patricia Ann Burlingame b. Meyer born. Father Charles served in the United States Air Force , the family moved to California.

In California, he attended Anaheim High School, which he graduated in 1967. He then attended the United States Naval Academy , where he earned his bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering in 1971 .

Professional development

Charles Burlingame joined the Navy and was trained as a naval aviator. He was posted to the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga and flew missions with the F-4 Phantom in the 103rd Combat Squadron. In 1979 he left the Navy, but remained a reservist. He volunteered for service during the Second Gulf War in 1991. Until he finally left the Navy in 1996, he worked as a liaison officer in the Pentagon .

In 1989 Charles Burlingame was hired by American Airlines, but in 1990 he was on leave. He worked as a manager for Lockheed and returned to American Airlines in 1994. Here he obtained the flight license for the Boeing models 727 , 757 and 767 ; first it was used on routes to South America. In order to have more time for his family, however, he was later transferred to transcontinental flights. Burlingame was married to flight attendant Sheri and lived with her in Oak Hill, Virginia .

AA 77

On September 11, 2001, Charles Burlingame was assigned to pilot American Airlines Flight 77. The flight should be from Washington Dulles International Airport to Los Angeles . There were 58 passengers and six crew members on board the Boeing 757-223. The start took place with a ten-minute delay at 8:20 a.m. local time. The plane was hijacked by five terrorists between 8:51 and 8:54 a.m. According to a telephone conversation between passenger Barbara Olson and her husband Theodore, both Captain Burlingame and First Officer David Charlebois had been taken to the stern to join the other kidnapped passengers. The kidnappers, under the command of Hani Handschur , directed the machine back to Washington and flew into the west side of the Pentagon. Nobody on board survived, a total of 189 people were killed in the attack, 64 on board the Boeing 757, another 125 in and around the Pentagon.

Burlingame died the day before his 52nd birthday, leaving behind his wife Sheri and daughter Wendy. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
