Charles Chauvin

Charles Eugène Chauvin (born March 2, 1836 in Toulouse , Haute-Garonne department , † March 7, 1899 in Besançon , Doubs department ) was a French flotilla admiral who was chief of the naval general staff between 1895 and 1896 .

Life

In 1854, Chauvin began training as a naval officer at the Naval School (École navale) in Lanvéoc . After serving in the port of Brest from July 1, 1856 to August 1, 1860, he was promoted to lieutenant at sea (Enseigne de vaisseau) and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Legion of Honor on August 13, 1863 . After his promotion to lieutenant captain (Lieutenant de Vaisseau) on April 4, 1865, he found other uses as an officer and was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Legion of Honor on December 8, 1870 . On December 1, 1877, he was promoted to frigate captain (Capitaine de Frégate) and was after January 1, 1879 in a use in the port of Rochefort . After his promotion to sea captain (Capitaine de Vaisseau) on May 9, 1885, he was seconded to the naval working committee in 1886 and took over the post of commander of the cruiser Davout lying in the port city of Toulon on October 20, 1890 .

After Chauvin had been promoted to Flotilla Admiral (Contre-amiral) on June 28, 1893 , he acted between August 10, 1893 and November 10, 1895 as Chief of Staff of the 2nd Marine District in Brest. He then took over on November 10, 1895 as the successor to Rear Admiral Edgar Humann-Guilleminot, the post of Chief of the General Staff of the Navy (Chef d'état-major de la Marine) . He held this position until he was replaced by Rear Admiral Jean-Charles-Alexandre Sallandrouze de Lamornaix on June 15, 1896 and was also commander of the Legion of Honor on April 22, 1896 . After that, on October 1, 1896, he became a member of the committee of the Inspector General of the Navy, which was responsible for anti -submarine defense. He was also a member of the lighthouse commission and was last assigned to the 2nd cadre department of the General Staff of the Navy on March 2, 1898.
