Charles Ferdinand Latrille Lorencez
Charles Ferdinand Latrille, comte de Lorencez ( 23 May 1814 - 16 July 1892 ) was a general in the French army who was in command of French troops in the second phase of the French intervention in Mexico .
Lorencez was born in Paris to a noble family. He attended the Military Academy of Saint-Cyr from 1830 to 1832, which he graduated as a lieutenant . His service took him to Algeria , among others ; he went through the usual officer career and in 1852 received the rank of Colonel . During the Crimean War he became after taking the Russian Battle of Malakoff for Général de division promoted.
In 1862 he was sent to Mexico with the reinforcements for the intervention troops , where he arrived on March 5, and received the high command in this theater of war as well as the promotion to lieutenant general . With 6,000 men he advanced inland according to orders, but was defeated by the numerically inferior troops of General Zaragoza in the battle of Puebla and forced to retreat towards the coast. Then Lorencez was replaced by General Forey and left Veracruz on December 17, 1862 for home.
Lorencez also fought in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. An illness that he contracted during his assignment in Mexico forced him to quit the service in 1872. In retirement, he worked on a history of the Mexico expedition.
