Charles d'Albert, duc de Luynes (born August 5, 1578 in Pont-Saint-Esprit , † December 15, 1621 in Longueville ) was a French statesman and Connétable of France and from 1619 Duke of Luynes . He helped Louis XIII. to power and, as the most important favorite and advisor, determined his policy in the first few years.

Life

D'Albert became a falconer for the young Louis XIII in 1611 . He made friends with the neglected boy and became his closest friend and confidante. The regent Maria de 'Medici and her favorite Concino Concini kept the young king away from any government business. D'Albert took advantage of the growing dissatisfaction of his protégé and, with his consent, initiated the assassination of Concini on April 24, 1617 at the gates of the Louvre . Ludwig then banished his mother to Blois and made Luynes his first minister, Premier Gentilhomme de la Chambre du Roi and Connétablen of France.

D'Albert, now rich and the most powerful man in France, married Marie de Rohan-Montbazon , a 17-year-old beauty from the court of the young Queen Anna of Austria , who gave him two children: Louis Charles (1620–1699) and the posthumous Anne Marie (1622–1646). In 1619 he became governor of Picardy and was ducal.

In the diplomatic field, d'Albert was quite successful. He achieved a rapprochement with England and tried to establish a balance in Europe between the Protestant states and the Habsburg Empire. In 1619 and 1620 he thwarted two uprisings of the high nobility against Ludwig that Maria de 'Medici had instigated.

In the military field he lacked a comparable talent. Nevertheless, Ludwig appointed him commander in chief during his campaign against the Huguenots in 1621. Under his hapless supreme command, the siege of Montauban failed. He died of typhus on December 15, 1621 while retreating.
